Spain 2026 - Day 53 - Saturday April 25 2026 - Camino Day 14 - Burgos to Hontanas - 18 KM

Hola

Feel free to click here for this Album.  It includes movies not yet linked in this blog.

I slept kind of poorly worrying about the price of bikes, how are bags could be handled and out later start if the bike did not work out.  We learned yesterday the if we needed to take a bus in the morning the only one was at 1 PM.  Michelle did not sleep so well also probably thinking about our time pressure.

We packed out full sized bags and headed out to Tienda de bicicletas Velobur https://velobur.es/  Diego is a legend in the cycling community and I can see why. 2 Americans were waiting in front of the building with the same idea.  We listened carefully to their introduction after Diego brought our bikes up from the stores basement.  Our american friends tried to save a few bucks getting regular mountain bikes.  Eek.  Our bikes were awesome solid looking Mountain bikes with Bosch drives.  From the research I've donethey are both Focus Jarifa 2 variants.

I was nervous about the price as we had no idea of our ride days.  He indicated he should not worry.  We committed to 255 Euro's per bike for 5 days.  Each extra day was 40 Euros each.  He would change us for the extra days after we learned what that was.  No we can do full stages or even 2 stages in one day getting a bunch of days under our belt.  The bikes were supplied with tools, helmet, water bottle, charger and really nice paniers.  He showed us all how to prep our Nap sac's to ride on top and bungies to hold them down.  Michelle and I had no issues moving everything to the paniers and securing our now unneeded nap sac.  Yay.

Decathlon was our next stop a few KM's out of the city to get gloves and shorts.  The ride on these bikes was awesome even without power.  Decathlon here is epic with reasonably priced stuff.  I went in first and found only gloves and cheaper temporary shorts.  No rubbery phone holder sadly.  A few of the stores tents were setup on display outside.  Perfect place to swap underwear for bike shorts.  Michelle splurged on good quality shorts and cheaper gloves like me. Yay we were finally dressed for the gig.

Getting back to the Camino was easy until the core of the city.  Without a phone holder I got mixed up a few times.  We actually got separated with Michelle not noticing a turn.  Google Maps shared location saved the day.  Once on the official trail, the markers are not that visible to a speeding bike.  Ride with GPS saved the day.  Finally out of the city the trail was easy and beautiful.  Will a nice tailwind our ride was a breeze with our bikes and their awesome sized tires and shocks.  The Electrics were needed a few time with the weight we carried.  Our Albergue was big, with a bar restaurant in the front while many many dorm rooms were in the back.  Steep climbs needed to get our bikes parked.  It took a while to sort out the removable battery and with limited outlets we had to play musical power.  I might buy another power bar and leave it later for Diego.  We kinda need it for these situations were outlets are a challenge.

We paid for the 7 PM dinner and had time to relax with drinks while contemplating some future changes to our booked accommodations.  Moving them proved difficult so we had a really short ride tomorrow.  No big deal.  The community dinner was amazing.  So much food came out of this little kitchen  They worked so hard.  We headed to bed for a great.  8 PM to 7 AM sleep.  Yay.
