Spain 2026 - Day 28 - Tuesday March 31 2026 - Nerja Caves and Frigiliana

Feel free to click here for this Album.  It includes movies not yet linked in this blog.

The Nerja caves were really cool.  They were apparently discovered by 4 teenagers goofing off.  A little tribute to their discovery is at the head of the caves.

Although the caves are very well designed with steps and and walkways, there are a lot of steps that some may not be able to navigate.  Before we headed down to these more difficult steps, those that needed it were offered the chance to experience them with a modern VR system.  Michelle and I chose to walk the caves which was awesome.  Those that chose to use the VR were offered a chance to see the Cave painting not offered to those on foot.

I have happy to see the Nerja caves are big enough to simply allow the experience to be enough by light alone.  It was not necessary to offer a light show or sound track  Merissa our guide had done this tour many many times.  That experience became apparent when we were inundated by a large group of teens. Tempted many of us were to get in front of them.  Merissa suggested we simply pause for a few moments as they would soon become bored and move on.  Right she was wow.   Walking down and upon steps the caves became warmer justifying removal of many layers.  What an impressive set of Stalactite and Stalagmites were were seeing.  Some were only recently sent to number 2 in size in the world.

We were soon reunited with the Virtual reality enjoyers and back on the bus towards Frigiliana.  Our tour of the city involved some steep steps steeping out of the way of the occasional car.  I noticed steeper steps offered an escape from cars and a chance to explore the city with less tourist stuff.  Carl was always in the back of the pack holding our Canadian flag   I asked him if we could bail on the tour and explore on our own.  We knew where the bus was and the meeting time and place.  He jokingly forbid it and off we were.

It was nice to simply go up and get some steps in from our missed training day earlier.  Steep the steps were through the community until we passed simple roads and eventually dirt ascending to the top of the mountain this city was built upon.  At the top was this communities water collection pool and a parking lot full of travellers.  Beyond that were the ruins of homes once built on the top.  We saw great views all of our tour members would have missed.

Knowing our route back would be all down, we descended quickly with plenty of time to spare.  Once more short bus ride it was to Los Huertos del Sevillano https://sevillanonerja.com/restaurantes/

For once I was super hungry and man the food here was impressive.  Awesome fresh salad, and impressive meat dish with thankfully no fries but rather a baked potato.  Desert was a sort of custard followed by a few choices of a liquor shot.  Carl tried to had out extras to make sure we all were extra happy.  This meal was impressive.

After lunch we walked a short distance to the primary focus of this community.  It was so nice to be here at this time to witness less tourists and more locals enjoying their countryside.

Frigiliana is a bucket list place to return to.
