Spain 2026 - Day 21 - Tuesday March 24 2026 - Chill Day 9 - Fuengirola Market by Bolt

Yay,  a day off.  We slept in a bit.  Mike/Donna/Mike and I wanted to hit the awesome Fuengirola Market again.

At breakfast we put together picnic lunch and chilled until meeting at the Cows's for 10:30.

I was considering asking Karen if we could pop onto a planned tour from another group.  I did not want to bug her with any insurance silliness so we simply used this chance to use the commonly popular used alt taxi service called Bolt.  I'm glad I tested the App and payment from our hotel.

Scheduling a 10:30 ride to the market was 37 Euros.  Ordering a ride at 10:40 was 20.  It required I enter some ID like a passport number at the time of ordering the ride.  A quick walk back to our rooms safe was all I needed.

For our first Bolt I spent a few more Euros to get one level above their budget car.  So glad I am.  We fit great and Donna's walker just barely fit into to trunk.  Out driver ignored all the Google Maps suggested routes still making good time.  Sadly the destination I picked (Fuengirola Market) deposited us closer to the beach.  I need to use Google Street View to better assign an arrival location.  The Bolt app, like Uber offers a way to tip the driver so I chucked him 5 Euros for the inconvenience.  He really appreciated a pin I offered.

The market was a little busier the last time we visited.  11:30 has plenty of both locals and tourists.  I simply needed some socks.  My only non Camino hikers are pretty thick Smart wool crew socks.  They were too hot on a 18-20 C day so 3 Euros for 2 pairs of white Cinco Raya Mans Bamboo Fiber might help.  Donna was pretty chilly lately so she grabbed a 15 Euro knitted sweater.  Mike and Michelle bought 1 KG of huge strawberries for 2.5 Euros.  The food part of the market we missed last visit was impressive.  It was really interesting to see the Spanish locals goofing off with the Spanish vendors who travel from all over Spain for this market.

For a sleep aid, we bought a small bag of Lavender and Rosemary root each for 1 Euros.  What a bargain.  Thankfully for the Camino the weight is negligible.  Soon we were at the exit and I was done with crowds.  We found and sat at a table to soon meet a server who mans these tables from a nearby restaurant.  He loves market days, he only had to man 17 tables and get to stay outside.  He texts orders to staff 50 metres away.  He simply has to keep the tables clean and take orders.  Instead of a busy inside restaurant gig,  he gets to chill outside and enjoy the vibe.  Smart dude.

Our helpful server confirmed our Bolt pickup and within 5 minutes another car was upon us.  His car's trunk was a little smaller requiring a slight disassembly of the upper arms.  No biggie.  Once again the Bolt arrival was a little off.  I need to fix that because I don't want these drivers to need to drive beyond with their company will pay them.  I indicated to the driver he did not start the drive in the App and therefor I could not offer a tip.  We fixed that and another 5 Euros was on it's way.  Another Canadian pin was again appreciated.

I skipped lunch to hit the Dentist.  My temporary Mcgiver popped out days ago when I tried to floss. They recognised me right away and saw me for free.  The Dentist wanted to fix the problem.  I indicated I finally had an excuse to move to Spain.  She laughed her face off.  Thankfully she confirmed there is no risk of food falling down the root canal channel.  I should be ok with keeping it clean for 9 more weeks until Canada is under our feet. She liked the idea of me using Oregano oil for now.  Yay

The receptionist confirmed there was no charge and when I asked if we could both approach for a cleaning they quickly found us an appointment for the next day at 3 PM.  The clinic is on Holiday next week.  The timing to see them today could not have been better.

I had just enough time to head home, skip lunch, hand wash a bunch of stuff, blog a bit and prepare for a Carvery dinner with others that signed up.

The Carvery is pretty awesome if you have a huge appetite https://thecarverycompany.com/  It's an all you can eat pig-out of very well spiced and cooked meats.  I tried to pick a little of each and bam had no space for veggies.  It was bonkers good but I wished I skipped a few meals before.  It was worth our discounted price of 20 Euros.  Carl even paid for our drinks.  Thanks Carl.

Sorry I took no pics of this day.  I might some say from others later
